NBA Fast Break Run 5 | Day 9

Pick 5 Players who will combine for 45 Field Goals Made and 55 Field Goal Attempts to earn your win.

Overview:

First thing’s first - congratulations to the Milwaukee Bucks on winning the Emirates NBA Cup. They were the underdogs going into this matchup and dominated from start to finish. Second - it’d be remiss to not acknowledge the recent NBA Top Shot blog article. Holiday events, upcoming changes to the user experience, the upcoming trade-in for dapper (rare = $10, legendary = $100), the return of set rewards, leaderboard relevancy, Fast Break updates including head-to-heads - so much to unpack and to be excited about. If you have not read the latest NBA Top Shot blog, it is worth the <10 minute read. Don’t forget to return to this article after reading the article though!

Fast Break Day 8 proved challenging for half the Fast Break participants as only 52% walked away with a win. The primary culprit to many losses is Luguentz Dort who was used in 70% of lineups and went 0-1 from outside the arc on the NBA Cup championship night. For this atrocious performance, he earns the Fast Break Dud of the Day Award. Dame Lillard, who was used in 57% of lineups, did not disappoint and single-handedly covered half (5) the day’s 10 3PM goal, which earns him the Fast Break Stud of the Day Award. With four days remaining in this run, we are down to 17 Fast Break participants who are in the running for the top prize out of over 8,400 Fast Break participants. Today’s objectives will likely result in another wave of losses across the board - including some in the top 17. Without further ado, let’s get into it.

Today’s Objective(s):

Fast Break Day 9 requires five (5) players who will make 45 or more field goals and attempt 55 or more shots, which means your lineup will need to average 9.0 FGM & 11.0 FGA per player. Considering the league average in field goal percentage hovers around 45-55%, FGA will not be an issue. You’ll want to focus your attention on FGM, which is no easy task. Over their last 10 games, only 12 players have averaged more than 9.0 FGM and only 8 are in action on Day 9. One poor outing or mid-game injury will derail your day. With 26 teams in action, you are not short on options but you are limited on players who can relied upon based on historical outcomes. There are, of course, those instances where someone has a night where they cannot miss, so their hot hand is fed (at the detriment of others). Considering the top 5 utilized includes three players with less than 40% total usage, we should anticipate many variations of lineups today.

  • Walking Buckets: Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Anthony Davis

  • Top Five (5) Players in FB Lineups: L. Ball (68%), L. Doncic (55%), J. Tatum (37%), J. Brown (37%), D. Fox (34%)

Looking Ahead:

  • Tomorrow, 40 rebounds will be the single objective; there are only 6 teams in action

  • Remaining objectives after today: REB, PTS, PIP, 3PM

Considerations:

  • Day 10 & 12 will only have six (6) teams in action

  • New Orleans & Sacramento have the most number of games (3)

  • Every other team has two (2) games remaining (see Fast Break Grid)

  • No team is playing the tail end of a back-to-back

  • Plan your lineups around Day 12 as it requires the most divergent stats of this run - points in the paint & three pointers made

Statistical Approach:

Top players in projected field goals made & field goal attempts according to Rotowire & NBA.com, which is available in the table(s) below. Overall rank is based on daily projections, last 10 games, and rest of season projections, which is stack ranked amongst peers for each objective. When there is a single objective, the three data points are still used to stack rank the players vs. ranking solely on projections. For tome+ subscribers, projected rest-of-season stats are available in the provided data file. Omission of certain players would be based on injuries at the time of data pull.

Run 5 Rewards:

  • Daily Reward: Top 100 each day will receive a Fast Break Rookie Debut pack

  • Milestone Reward: Reach 3, 6, 9, or 12 wins and each tier earns you a pack

    • 3 wins: One (1) Grail Seeker pack

    • 12 wins: Perfect Fast Break pack

Tome Collective’s Fast Break Line-Up (Commons Only Challenge):

Many Fast Break participants do not have an extensive collection of rare or legendary moments, so they are limited to single use commons. Even with a limited lineup, participants have found a way to reach the maximum rewards. Follow along as the Tome Collective account participates in Fast Break without using any player more than once - in both our success and failures.

Day 8 proved to be challenging since we couldn’t use D. Lillard who chipped in 5 3PM. L. Dort fell well short of expectation which led to us falling one 3PM shy of earning a win. That means we’ll need to win the remaining days to earn the top reward, but only need one win to earn the mid-tier pack. Day 9 won’t be easy, though.
