NBA Playoff Race
Only a Few Games Remain — Handful That Matter
Denver Is Peaking at Exactly the Right Time. Ten. That's how many games the Denver Nuggets have won in a row after handling Memphis 136-119 on Wednesday night. The Nuggets are 52-28, locked into the 3-seed, and playing the best basketball of any team in the Western Conference and have beaten teams ahead of them. Denver isn't chasing anyone — but the way they're playing right now, Minnesota is going to have their hands full in the first round.
Meanwhile, OKC just won't stop. The Thunder rolled through the Clippers 128-110 to push their own streak to seven, improving to 64-16. The gap between Oklahoma City and the rest of the West is 3 games over San Antonio and 12 over the third seed. The 1-seed has been decided for a while. The question now is who can stay healthy throughout the playoffs. Last year, no less than three players went down with serious injuries in the postseason, which had meaningful impact on the results.
San Antonio Handled Business — and That's All They Needed to Do. The Spurs didn't need a statement game Wednesday. They just needed a win. Portland came to Frost Bank Center and left with a 112-101 loss, keeping San Antonio at 61-19 and firmly in control of the West's 2-seed. Three games back of OKC with the season winding down, the Spurs aren't catching the Thunder — but home-court advantage through the second round is secure, and they're doing exactly what a contender should do in April.
Lakers and Rockets: Still Tied, Still Tense. Neither the Lakers nor the Rockets played Wednesday, which means the 4-5 standoff in the West remains exactly where it was: both at 50-29, both with genuine playoff implications riding on the final stretch. LA has dropped three straight and holds the lower seed by tiebreaker. Houston has won seven in a row and has all the momentum. This one is going to come down to the wire.
Minnesota dropped to 47-33, but are not at risk of losing their 6-seed as they are three games ahead of Phoenix with two games remaining.
Phoenix Clinches the 7-Seed. The Suns snapped a one-game skid by beating Dallas 112-107 on Wednesday, moving to 44-36 and holding the West's 7-seed. Phoenix is 5-5 in their last 10, which isn't inspiring, but a win is a win this late in the season. The Clippers fell to 41-39 after the blowout loss in OKC and are now sitting in the 8-spot. Portland dropped to 40-40 — exactly even — after losing in San Antonio and sits ninth.
Orlando Muscles Their Way onto the Doorstep. The biggest move in Wednesday's East standings came from Orlando. The Magic beat Minnesota 132-120 to win their fourth straight, climbing to 44-36 and right on the heels of Toronto (44-35) for the 6-seed. That's a direct playoff spot. Toronto didn't play Wednesday, so the Raptors hold a half-game edge over the Magic — but with Orlando playing their best basketball of the second half, the 6-seed is now a genuine two-team race.
Philadelphia dropped to 43-36 with a loss-free Wednesday but is now a full game behind both Toronto and Orlando for a direct berth. The 76ers are in the play-in at 8 and need teams ahead of them to stumble. Charlotte (43-37) sits ninth and is also running out of runway.
Detroit and Cleveland Flexing in the East. The top of the East got more interesting on Wednesday. Detroit didn't just beat Milwaukee — they demolished them 137-111, moving to 58-22 and sending a message to the rest of the conference. The Pistons have been clinical all season, and they're not coasting toward the playoffs; they're arriving — especially with the return of Cade Cunningham. Just in time to prove they belong as the 1-seed.
Cleveland also took care of business, beating Atlanta 122-116 to push their win streak to four and improve to 51-29. The Cavaliers are now tied with the Knicks at 51 wins for the East's 3-4 seeds, but have one more loss. Should they end the season tied, Cleveland holds the tiebreaker. Both teams look dangerous. Atlanta dropped the loss and fell to 45-35, still holding the 5-seed but with Toronto and the rest of the play-in teams inching closer.
Boston continues to roll at 54-25 (W4), locked into the 2-seed and looking like the best team in the East by quality, but second by record.
