WNBA Fast Break Classic | Run 10 | Day 8
Today’s Objective(s): 15 Rebounds & 10 Assists
Overview:
Although there were five games yesterday, there were two that stood above the rest in terms of relevance to the postseason. Although Los Angeles did their part in securing a hard-fought win over the favorites in Phoenix, Seattle’s come from behind win against Golden State helped them claim the final playoff berth.
Fast Break Day 7 was also the fifth day where over 50% of collectors earned a win, but it was barely over that threshold at 51%. Of the 19 collectors who were perfect through Monday, 16 remained perfect through Day 7. Today is another one where only two teams are in action, so anticipate a low win rate.
With two days remaining in the 2025 WNBA Season, all playoff spots have been finalized. The question now is seeding as Las Vegas and Atlanta are battling for the second seed. Indiana, Golden State, and Seattle are jockeying for 6th through 8th. In any case, the opponent is not going to be easy as Minnesota, Atlanta, & Las Vegas will be heavily favored. Let’s dive into yesterday’s results and look ahead to today’s game.
WNBA Score(s): September 9th
Liberty Lock Down Mystics to Close Out Home Slate (New York 75, Washington 66)
New York wrapped up its regular season home schedule with a win over Washington, powered by Emma Meesseman’s 19 points and Breanna Stewart’s 14. With their full roster finally healthy—including the return of Sabrina Ionescu—the Liberty jumped out early and led 41–26 at the half. Jonquel Jones added a double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds), improving New York’s record to 34–0 when she hits that mark. Washington, led by rookies Kiki Iriafen (16 points) and Sonia Citron (13), closed the gap to seven in the third but couldn’t complete the comeback. The Mystics ended their season on a 10-game skid, while New York locked in the No. 5 seed.
Fever Top Lynx as Collier Rests (Minnesota 83, Indiana 72)
Indiana closed its regular season with a double-digit win over league-leading Minnesota, who rested MVP candidate Napheesa Collier. Kelsey Mitchell led the way with 18 points, and the Fever shot 48.4% from the field while holding the Lynx to 10.0% from outside. The win pushed the Fever to 24–20, while Minnesota sits at 33–10 with one game to go, still holding the top seed heading into the playoffs.
Aces Extend Win Streak to 14 with Rout of Sky (Las Vegas 92, Chicago 61)
Las Vegas continued its late-season surge with a dominant thirty point win over Chicago, marking their 14th straight victory. The Aces shot 54.8% from the field and held the Sky to just 32.8%, forcing 12 turnovers and controlling the pace throughout. A’ja Wilson led the charge with clutch fourth-quarter buckets, while Jackie Young and Jewell Loyd added perimeter firepower. Chicago, now 10–32, couldn’t keep pace despite double digit contributions from Kamilla Cardoso and Michaela Onywenwere. Vegas looks playoff-ready and is one of the teams to watch for the championship.
Sparks Upset Mercury Behind Hamby’s Fourth-Quarter Surge (Los Angeles 88, Phoenix 83)
Los Angeles kept its postseason hopes alive with a hard fought win over Phoenix. Dearica Hamby was unstoppable down the stretch, scoring multiple layups in the final minutes and finishing with a game high 25 points. Kelsey Plum and Rae Burrell also had strong contributions. Phoenix, despite a strong start and 25 first-quarter points, couldn’t hold off LA’s late push. Los Angeles took care of business on the road, but the losses they accumulated in the first half of the season proved too much to overcome.
Storm Clinch Final Playoff Spot in Wild Finish (Seattle 74, Golden State 73)
Seattle secured the last playoff berth with a dramatic one-point win over Golden State, capped by Erica Wheeler’s go-ahead jumper with 18.5 seconds left. Wheeler finished with 17 points and hit 5-of-7 from deep, while Nneka Ogwumike added 16 points and eight boards. The Valkyries surged ahead with a 13–0 third-quarter run, fueled by Janelle Salaun’s trio of threes, but faltered late. Salaun led Golden State with 22 points, while Temi Fagbenle and Veronica Burton each added 14. Seattle’s fourth-quarter response—starting with a 10–0 run—sealed their 20th postseason appearance.
Recap: Day 7
The day turned out to be quite challenging for three pointers as those who typically knock down multiple outside shots were lacking. Courtney Williams, for example, was utilized in 49% of lineups and was projected as the third best option for assists & three pointers. Instead, she delivered five assists and made no three pointers. As she had the least number of assists and had made no three pointers, she is your Fast Break Dud of the Day.
On the other hand, Chelsea Gray had the best all-around day amongst the top five players as she had five assists and two three pointers. Considering the latter was the one that tripped up most collectors, her performance was integral to success as it covered 40% of the requirement. With her performance, she earned the Fast Break Star of the Day.
Today’s Matchups:
Atlanta Dream (29-14) @ Connecticut Sun (11-32) | 7:00PM ET | 11:00PM UTC
Tonight at Mohegan Sun Arena, the Atlanta Dream face the Connecticut Sun in their final game of the 2025 WNBA regular season. Atlanta enters as the overwhelming favorite with an 87.3% win probability, riding a five-game win streak and surging behind Rhyne Howard’s perimeter brilliance and Brionna Jones’s interior control. The Dream have already clinched a top-three seed and are using this matchup to fine-tune rotations ahead of the playoffs.
Connecticut, meanwhile, closes out a challenging season with Tina Charles chasing a franchise scoring milestone and Marina Mabrey providing flashes of offensive spark. But with the Sun dropping four of their last five and struggling to contain transition-heavy teams like Atlanta, the Dream are projected to dominate possession and close the regular season with a convincing road win.
