WNBA Fast Break Classic | Run 9 | Day 7

Today’s Objective(s): 15 Assists & 5 Three Pointers Made

Overview:

Five of six days this run has resulted in a 60% or greater win rate, so the majority of Fast Break participants should be on pace or have reached the necessary wins for the mid-tier reward with plenty still in the running for the 9-win award, which is uncommon. With three days to go, we’re inching closer to that possibility.

With yesterday’s loss, Washington is officially eliminated and the final playoff spot is down to 2-3 teams with Los Angeles on the outside looking in. They’ll face the newly minted spoilers today with the hopes of keeping their postseason dreams alive.

WNBA Score(s): August 30th

Lynx Dominate Sun to Secure Road Win No. 15 (MIN 94, CON 70)

Minnesota flexed its top-seed credentials with a commanding 20+ point win over Connecticut, marking their 15th road victory of the season. The Lynx shot a high percentage from the field and outscored the Sun 28–16 in the fourth quarter to break the game open. Alanna Smith & DiJonai Carrington led the way with 18 points apiece, while Napheesa Collier added 17. Connecticut struggled to generate offense and dropped to 9–28, unable to contain Minnesota’s transition game and interior scoring.

Valkyries Crush Mystics in Defensive Showcase (GSV 99, WAS 62)

Golden State delivered a statement win at home, dismantling Washington by over 30 points behind a suffocating defensive effort and balanced scoring. The Valkyries held the Mystics to just 22 first-half points and forced 12 turnovers. Janelle Salaun and Veronica Burton led the charge, while the bench contributed 36 points. Washington’s offense stalled early and never recovered, falling to 16–23 as Golden State improved to 20–18 and tightened its grip on the final playoff spot. With their loss, Washington is officially eliminated from the postseason.

Storm Hold Off Sky in Fourth-Quarter Push (SEA 79, CHI 69)

Seattle used a 22–15 second quarter to establish a lead which carried to the end of the game, securing a 79–69 win and moving to 21–19 on the season. Nneka Ogwumike paced the Storm with 20 points, while Ezi Magbegor added 13 and 6 rebounds. The Sky, led by Angel Reese’s 20 points and 10 boards, kept the Sky within striking distance through three quarters but couldn’t match Seattle’s late-game execution. Chicago dropped to 9–30.

Mercury Stifle Liberty in Defensive Masterclass (PHO 80, NYL 63)

Phoenix shut down New York’s high-powered offense in a lopsided win, holding the Liberty to just 36.8% shooting and 4-of-21 from three. Kahleah Copper led the Mercury with 22 points, while Emma Meesseman added 17 and 4 assists. Breanna Stewart was held to 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting, and New York never found rhythm after a 16-point first quarter. Phoenix improved to 25–14, while the Liberty fell to 24–16, slipping further behind Atlanta in their push to secure home court in the first round.

Recap: Day 6

Day 6 was a another positive day and third straight where more than 60% earned a win (88% yesterday). Nneka Ogwumike was the 3rd most utilized player and had the highest contribution as she went 8 for 17 from the field. With her performance, she earned the Fast Break Star of the Day award.

Of the five most utilized players, Breanna Stewart had the worst showing as she went 4 for 9. Not awful by the day’s objective’s standards, but still the worst of the pack and below the average needed to pace a win for the day. With her less than stellar performance, she earned the Fast Break Dud of the Day award.

Today’s Matchups:

Washington Mystics (16-24) @ Los Angeles Sparks (17-20) | 8:00PM ET | 12:00AM UTC

At Crypto.com Arena, the Los Angeles Sparks host the Washington Mystics in a matchup that leans heavily toward the home team with a 72.7% win probability. The Sparks are looking to bounce back from a narrow loss to Indiana, and they’ll rely on Kelsey Plum—averaging 19.8 points over her last ten games—and Azura Stevens to set the tone. Washington enters on a six-game skid and will be without Georgia Amoore and Jacy Sheldon, placing added pressure on Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen to carry the load. With L.A.’s perimeter shooting and turnover advantage, the Sparks are projected to control tempo and secure a much-needed win.

Indiana Fever (21-18) @ Golden State Valkyries (20-18) | 8:30PM ET | 12:30AM UTC

Later tonight at Chase Center, the Golden State Valkyries host the Indiana Fever in a near-even contest with playoff implications. Indiana holds a slight edge with a 52.9% win probability, but Golden State has already clinched the season series, winning both prior meetings. The Fever ride a two-game win streak behind Aliyah Boston’s two-way dominance and Odyssey Sims’ clutch play, while the Valkyries counter with Temi Fagbenle and Veronica Burton. With both teams battling for seeding and Golden State on a back-to-back, Indiana’s momentum and interior defense give them the projected edge in a tightly contested showdown.
