WNBA Fast Break Classic | Run 9 | Day 6
Today’s Objective(s): 25 Field Goals Made & 45 Field Goal Attempts
Overview:
Five days down and four to go in Fast Break Run 9. With yesterday’s win, Atlanta secured their playoff spot and continues to put pressure on Las Vegas for the 2nd seed. Six of the eight teams in action today are in the postseason picture, but the one with the biggest implication is Washington and Golden State who are in a tight race for the final spot. This one is a must-win for Washington if they want to keep their postseason dreams alive. Los Angeles will be watching this matchup intently also as they are also fighting for that final spot.
If you have historical players in your collection, be sure to set your lineups before the 15 games begin. Don’t know who to start? Be sure to check today’s historic Fast Break run article.
WNBA Score(s): August 29th
Dream Drop 100 on Shorthanded Wings (ATL 100, DAL 78)
Atlanta overwhelmed Dallas with a blowout win, capitalizing on the Wings’ depleted rotation and defensive breakdowns. The Dream controlled the pace from the outset, building a 9-point lead by halftime, which dwindled to 4 points by the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw Atlanta expand their lead significantly as they outscored Dallas 29-11. With eight Wings players listed on the injury report, including Arike Ogunbowale and Aziaha James, Dallas struggled to keep up despite 23 points from Maddy Siegrist and 16 from Paige Bueckers. Atlanta officially secured their playoff spot with a win and have their sights on the 2nd overall seed.
Fever Steal One in LA Behind Boston’s Defensive Brilliance (IND 76, LAS 75)
Aliyah Boston delivered a masterclass in two-way dominance, finishing with 22 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and a career-high 6 steals to lift Indiana past the Sparks by a single point. Odyssey Sims added 21 points, including the Fever’s final five, capped by a clutch floater with 13.6 seconds left. Boston’s steal with 1.9 seconds remaining sealed the win, as Indiana moved to 21–18 and climbed into sixth place in the standings. Los Angeles, led by Azura Stevens’ 17 points and a late go-ahead free throw, couldn’t close out the final possession and dropped to 17–20, falling two games behind Golden State for the final playoff spot.
Recap: Day 5
Day 5 was another positive day, but not as high of a win rate compared to Day 4. Still, 66% of Fast Break participants earned a win, which is one step closer to the 6 or 9 win pack (depending on your record so far).
Rhyne Howard was the 5th most utilized player, appearing in 54% of lineups, and she came through as she went 6 for 11 from outside the arc. Her performance accounted for 86% of the makes and 73% of the attempts, which earned her the Fast Break Star of the Day.
Shey Peddy, on the other hand, was utilized in 55% of lineups and delivered a 0 for 2 performance from outside the arc, which earned her the Fast Break Dud of the Day. Honorable mention goes to Lexie Hull who was seen in 61% of lineups and shot 1 for 1 from outside.
Today’s Matchups:
Minnesota Lynx (30-8) @ Connecticut Sun (10-28) | 7:00PM ET | 11:00PM UTC
The Minnesota Lynx visit the Connecticut Sun with a commanding 88.1% win probability. With Napheesa Collier back from her injury coupled with the solid play of Kayla McBride and Courtney Williams, Minnesota looks to shake off their previous game loss and build momentum going into the playoffs. Tina Charles continues to lead the Sun, but Connecticut’s offensive struggles and one of the league-worst records make this a steep climb. Expect Minnesota to control tempo early and extend their dominance.
Washington Mystics (16-23) @ Golden State Valkyries (19-18) | 8:30PM ET | 12:30AM UTC
At Chase Center, the Golden State Valkyries host the Washington Mystics in a matchup with huge playoff implications that favors the expansion squad with a 67.4% win probability. Veronica Burton and Janelle Salaun have been steady contributors for Golden State, while Washington leans on Shakira Austin and Sonia Citron to keep pace. With both teams hovering near the postseason line, the Valkyries’ rebounding edge and home-court rhythm give them the projected advantage, which would be a knock-out blow for Washington.
Chicago Sky (9-29) @ Seattle Storm (21-19) | 9:00PM ET | 1:00AM UTC
Seattle welcomes the Chicago Sky to Climate Pledge Arena, where the Storm hold an 84.5% win probability. Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins continue to drive Seattle’s playoff push, while Chicago relies on Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese amid a tough stretch. With Seattle surging and the Sky struggling to contain perimeter threats, the Storm are projected to cruise to a comfortable win.
New York Liberty (24-15) @ Phoenix Mercury (24-14) | 10:00PM ET | 2:00AM UTC
Closing out the night in Phoenix, the Mercury host the New York Liberty in a near-even matchup, but one with seeding implications as both are locks for the playoffs. Phoenix holds a slight edge with a 52.1% win probability and a win would increase their odds at homecourt in the first round. Kahleah Copper and Alyssa Thomas headline the Mercury’s attack, while New York counters with Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones. With both teams battling for top-four positioning, expect a tightly contested game, though Phoenix’s home-court edge and recent form tip the scales in their favor.
