WNBA Fast Break Classic | Run 6 | Day 6
Today’s Objective(s): 5 Blocks & 50 Points in the Paint
Overview:
After four days of smooth sailing, we ran into our first buzzsaw of this run as only 16% of participants earned a win yesterday. This was the first time we’ve seen win rates fall below 70% and establishes the first blemish on most collectors’ Fast Break runs. With five days to go (including today), collectors are ranging from 2-4 wins away from the mid-tier reward.
WNBA Score(s):
Sparks Stun Liberty in Brooklyn Shootout (LAS 101, NYL 99)
L.A. came into Barclays as heavy underdogs and walked out with a signature win. The Sparks exploded for 35 first-quarter points, riding a red-hot start from Rickea Jackson—17 points on 6-of-7 shooting in the opening frame—and clutch threes from Kelsey Plum. Breanna Stewart only played three minutes and exited the game due to a leg injury. Sabrina Ionescu and Natasha Cloud would help New York chip away at the Spark’s lead and tied it with 23 seconds to go in the game. Jackson, however, responded by calling game via a layup with a second to spare to help L.A. leave with a two point victory.
Mystics Muzzle Storm with Defensive Grit (WAS 69, SEA 58)
Washington leaned into its identity and got results, despite being heavy underdogs. The Mystics held Seattle to just 58 points, using disciplined rotations and rebounding control to frustrate the Storm’s rhythm. Three Mystics players who accumulate double digit rebounds, which helped Washington out-rebound Seattle by a whopping 16 differential. Skylar Diggins struggled mightily and could only score 5 points on 20% shooting from the field. With this upset and signature win, Washington’s surprise season continues and could a precursor to a strong postseason.
Fast Break Recap: Day 5
Day 5 required rebounds & free throws. Shakira Austin was the 3rd most utilized player yesterday and was included in 50% of lineups. She responded with the high vote of confidence with 10 rebounds and 4 free throws, which accounted for 40% of the required threshold for both objectives. With her performance, she earned the Fast Break Star of the Day.
On the other hand, Ezi Magbegor was the 5th most utilized player and was included in 43% of lineups. She, unfortunately, did not have as strong of a day than the four players ahead of her and she could only deliver 3 rebounds with no free throws made, which earned her the Fast Break Dud of the Day. Honorable mention goes to Breanna Stewart who exited the LAS-NYL game after only 3 minutes due to leg injury.
Today’s Matchups:
Golden State Valkyries (11-12) vs Connecticut Sun (3-20)
The Golden State Valkyries head to Mohegan Sun Arena to face the Connecticut Sun in a game that leans heavily toward the visitors. With a 69.5% win probability, Golden State looks to capitalize on Connecticut’s ongoing struggles, despite Tina Charles anchoring the paint. The Valkyries’ balanced scoring and defensive versatility make them the projected winner in this celebratory matchup airing on CBS Sports Network.
Indiana Fever (13-12) vs Chicago Sky (7-17)
At the United Center, Indiana takes on Chicago in the third installment of their season series, with the Fever holding a 2–0 edge. Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston headline a surging Indiana squad fresh off a win over Vegas, while Chicago hopes to snap a four-game skid amid Barbie Game Day festivities. With the Fever’s starters clicking and the Sky missing key contributors, Indiana is favored to sweep the season series.
Las Vegas Aces (12-13) vs Dallas Wings (7-18)
Las Vegas visits Dallas at College Park Center, entering with a 64.8% win probability. A’ja Wilson continues her usual form, supported by Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young. Dallas counters with Arike Ogunbowale and Paige Bueckers, but injuries and lineup instability make this a tough climb. Expect Vegas to control tempo and get back to .500 heading into August.
Phoenix Mercury (15-9) vs Washington Mystics (12-12)
Phoenix travels to CareFirst Arena to face a competitive Washington team who beat a strong Storm team yesterday. Alyssa Thomas and Satou Sabally lead the Mercury’s frontcourt, while the Mystics rely on Brittney Sykes and a pair of rookies (Kiki Iriafen & Sonia Citron) to anchor both ends. With Phoenix’s road poise and Washington’s recent form, the Mercury are only slight favorites to edge out a close one.
Atlanta Dream (14-10) vs Minnesota Lynx (22-4)
The Minnesota Lynx host the Atlanta Dream at Target Center, entering with a 69.5% win probability. Napheesa Collier continues her MVP-level campaign, while Kayla McBride and Alanna Smith round out a defensive juggernaut. Atlanta, still adjusting to Rhyne Howard’s absence, will lean on Allisha Gray and Brionna Jones. With Minnesota’s home dominance and playoff urgency, the Lynx are projected to extend their win streak.
Today’s Objective(s): Day 6
You’ll need five (5) players who will accumulate 5.0 or more blocks and score 50.0 or more points in the paint, which means each player will need to average 1.0 BLK & 10.0 PITP.
Although these two objectives have a high correlation based on player profiles, they occur on opposite sides of the floor. For the sake of today, there are a number of players who have a tendency to roam the paint on both ends of the court but it may not translate to players who excel in both categories. There are ten teams in action today, so you are not short on options, but today’s projections show there aren’t many who can deliver for both objectives. This may require you to lean into the use of specialists in order to put your best foot forward.
