WNBA Fast Break Classic | Run 5 | Day 9

Today’s Objective(s): 30 Field Goals Made & 7 Three Pointers Made

WNBA Scores:

Indiana Stays Hot, Top Sun Behind Howard’s Double-Double (Fever 85, Sun 77)

The Fever extended its win streak to three with a composed road victory over Connecticut, 85–77. Natasha Howard set the tone early and never let up, finishing with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Kelsey Mitchell added 20 points to keep the offense humming. Caitlin Clark chipped in with 11 points and 4 assists, though she exited in the final minute with groin discomfort. The Sun leaned on Tina Charles and Bria Hartley to stay close, but couldn’t match Indiana’s second-half execution. For the Fever, it’s another step forward—and a reminder that their depth is starting to click.

Sparks Surge Past Mystics in Second-Half Breakaway (Sparks 99, Mystics 80)

L.A. found its rhythm and ran with it. The Sparks turned a tight first half into a runaway win, outscoring Washington 55–37 after the break to close out a 99–80 victory at Crypto.com Arena. Dearica Hamby and Rickea Jackson led the charge, combining for a flurry of buckets that broke the game open. The Mystics struggled to contain L.A.’s transition game and couldn’t generate stops when it mattered. For the Sparks, it’s a confidence-builder heading into the All-Star break—and a reminder that when their offense flows, they’re a tough out…if they can make the playoffs.

Fast Break Recap: Day 8

Three pointers and offensive rebounds have virtually non-existent correlation, but there is one player who has shown they can deliver on both fronts. For that reason, Azura Stevens was utilized in 61% of lineups and she delivered with 2 offensive rebounds (40%) and 3 three pointers (60%). With her performance, she was your Fast Break Star of the Day. Interestingly enough, Dearica Hamby receives honorable mentions as she had a similar stat line as she delivered 3 offensive rebounds and 2 three pointers. On the other hand, Kelsey Mitchell was leaned upon by 57% of lineups and delivered double donuts as she had no outside makes and no offensive rebounds. With her poor showing, she earned the Fast Break Dud of the Day.

Today’s Matchups:

Atlanta Dream (12-9) vs Chicago Sky (7-14)

At Wintrust Arena, the Atlanta Dream face the Chicago Sky in a celebrated matchup with playoff implications. Atlanta enters as the favorite with a 64.9% win probability, looking to capitalize on Chicago’s recent inconsistency. Allisha Gray and Brionna Jones will be key for the Dream, especially with Rhyne Howard sidelined due to injury. Chicago counters with Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, but Atlanta’s depth and defensive edge make them the projected winner in this fourth meeting of the season.

Phoenix Mercury (15-6) vs Minnesota Lynx (19-4)

The Minnesota Lynx host the Phoenix Mercury in a marquee showdown of the top two teams at Target Center. Minnesota holds a commanding 74.3% win probability, anchored by Napheesa Collier and Kayla McBride’s two-way brilliance. Phoenix counters with Satou Sabally and Alyssa Thomas, but they’ve dropped both prior matchups this season to the Lynx by double digits. With momentum and home-court advantage, Minnesota is expected to complete the season sweep.

Golden State Valkyries (10-11) vs Seattle Storm (13-9)

Seattle welcomes Golden State to Climate Pledge Arena in a Western Conference clash. The Storm are favored with a 65.4% win probability, led by Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins. Golden State, fresh off a 104-point outing, will lean on Tiffany Hayes and Veronica Burton to keep pace. The Valkyries won their last meeting in dominant fashion, but Seattle’s experience and defensive edge suggest a bounce-back win at home.

Indiana Fever (12-10) vs New York Liberty (14-6)

In Brooklyn, the Indiana Fever take on the New York Liberty in a nationally televised clash on CBS Sports Network. While odds are tight, New York’s home-court edge and Breanna Stewart’s dominance give them a slight advantage. Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell will need to be sharp to counter Sabrina Ionescu’s playmaking and Stewie’s all-around presence. Expect fireworks, but Liberty’s depth makes them the projected favorite.

Las Vegas Aces (10-11) vs Dallas Wings (6-16)

The Las Vegas Aces visit the Dallas Wings at College Park Center, aiming to close the first half of the season at .500. The Aces enter as the favorite, with A’ja Wilson and Chelsea Gray expected to lead the charge. Dallas, still adjusting to injuries and lineup shifts, will rely on Arike Ogunbowale and Paige Bueckers to stay competitive. With playoff urgency rising, the Aces are projected to control the tempo and secure the win.

Power Rankings (Week 8) & Notable Fast Break Players:

Minnesota maintains their stranglehold on the top spot, but a couple losses brings them closer to the pack. New York jumps two spots to 3rd with Golden State falling two spots due to a rough week. Dallas’s momentum has stalled and they also fell down two spots since last week. With the All-Star break quickly approaching, it also means we’re at the halfway point of this season. There are plenty of games to be played though, so the playoff picture may look much different in about a month.
