NBA Fast Break Run 13 | Day 5

Today’s Objective(s): 45 Points in the Paint & 5 Blocks

Recap & Overview:

We’ve reached a new high watermark for this run - 27% of Fast Breakers earned a win yesterday. That makes four straight days we’ve seen a deterioration of the number of perfect records in this run. Through Day 3, there were 30 perfect records. That number has been halved after yesterday’s result and there are only 15 Fast Break participants who have won all four games this run. The theme of this Classic run is reliance on players who are not the most utilized as that has been the differentiator this series.

For example, Giannis is typically utilized when scoring, field goals, or rebounds; yet 2% of lineups included him in their starting five which he rewarded with 20 rebounds and two steals. Since he wasn’t one of the most utilized, he is your honorable mention of the day. Jimmy Butler was relied upon by 77% Fast Breakers and he delivered a paltry 2 assists, but swiped the ball three times. His teammate Draymond Green was utilized in 63% of lineups, but he only reached the minimum assists threshold without any steals (although he is your leading candidate for Defensive Player of the Year). Thybulle did what he was hired to do - he gathered three steals and contributed a couple assists. Doncic was also in the top five in utilization and contributed seven assists with no steals. Lastly, Ja hit the game winner to lead Memphis to a win, but he only had three assists and one steal. If you had multiple of these players in your lineup, chances are you reached the steals goal but fell short on the assists goal and some of these players grossly underperformed their assist average to date. Of the bunch, Jimmy Buckets was today’s culprit for higher than usual losses, so he earned today’s Fast Break Dud of the Day award.

In Pro Mode, we had our lowest win rate to date (19%) which reduced the number of perfect records to 103 (down from 342). The Classic rollercoaster may have added a new companion, but hopefully not. With 125 points needed and limited to moments with a rookie year badge, chances are the win rate will be low again.

Did you know tome+ members have access to data that filters for the limiter of the day? We handle the data aggregation & filtering for you to help you reduce the time needed to evaluate the best lineup for the day. It also comes in handy when a late scratch impedes your lineup and you need a quick alternative. If you’re curious, but don’t want to pay the $4.99 per month or $12.99 for three months, sending any rare moment to TS: TomeCollective will grant you access for three months, which will include the NBA Playoffs and the beginning of the WNBA Season. Considering the low ask of a rare moment is about $7.00, that’s a 46% discount. Best case scenario you save time and earn a few more wins; worst case scenario you save time with your Fast Break lineups over three months and are out a single rare moment. Not a bad risk-reward trade-off - especially if it leads to more wins. Whether you choose to move forward or not, let’s get a win today.

Today’s Objective(s):

Fast Break Day 5 requires five (5) players who will score 45.0 or more points in the paint and accumulate 5.0 or more blocks, which means your lineup will need to average 9.0 PIP & 1.0 BLK per player. Between the two, blocks will likely be the objective that will determine whether you win today whereas points in the paint will determine where you place overall. Both important, but you’ll need to cross the green line before the rankings matter. With the way this run has been going for the majority though, a win is a win.

  • Little of Both: Anthony Davis, Mark Williams, Evan Mobley, Ivica Zubac, Kristaps Porzingis

  • Inside Scorers: Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, LeBron James, Ivica Zubac, Cade Cunningham, Kawhi Leonard, Alperen Sengun, Devin Booker, Mark Williams, Anthony Davis, DeMar DeRozan

  • Shot Blockers: Chet Holmgren, Myles Turner, Evan Mobley, Kristaps Porzingis, Anthony Davis, Mark Williams, Ivica Zubac, Draymond Green, Yves Missi, Peyton Watson

  • Top Five (5) Players in Classic Lineups: E. Mobley (74%), I. Zubac (58%), A. Davis (47%), M. Turner (46%), K. Porzingis (35%)

  • Pro Mode Limitations: Rookie Year Badge

Looking Ahead:

  • Tomorrow: 20 Assists minus Turnovers will be the single objective; 10 teams in action

  • Objectives frequency (after today):

    • 2x: 3PM, PTS

    • 1x: FGM, FGA, OREB, AST-TO, 3PA, AST, STL, BLK, PIP

Considerations:

  • Orlando has the least number of games remaining (4)

  • Seventeen (17) teams have the most number of games this run (6)

  • Golden State, LA Lakers, Portland, & Toronto are playing the tail-end of a back-to-back

  • All teams will be active on Day 12 & Day 13

  • Day 8 only has 4 teams in action, but the objective is lower than usual

  • Day 6 & 11 only has 10 teams in action

  • There are three days (after today) where there are 20 or more teams in action

  • 5 of 9 days this run will have a single objective (or resembles a single objective)

  • Pro mode has a different limitation each day; it also has different objectives compared to Classic

NBA Playoff Picture:

Eastern Conference: There was no change among the top four teams, but with Milwaukee’s win they move ahead of Detroit into 5th. There’s also no change in the four play-in tournament teams (which will likely be the four unless Detroit goes on a long losing streak while Orlando goes on a tear), but Miami’s loss puts them at risk of falling into 10th.

Western Conference: With Memphis’s buzzer beater win, they leapfrog Minnesota into 6th. With the Lakers losing, they fall to 4th and Golden State is nipping at their heels. The next few days will have a meaningful impact in the standings as 3rd through 8th are separated by just 2.5 games.

Statistical Approach:

Top players in projected points in the paint & blocks according to Rotowire & NBA.com, which is available in the table(s) below. When there is a single objective, the three data points are still used to stack rank the players vs. ranking solely on projections. For tome+ subscribers, projected rest-of-season stats are available in the provided data file. Omission of certain players would be based on injuries at the time of data pull.

Tome Collective’s Fast Break Run 13 Line-Up (Commons Only Challenge):

Many Fast Break participants do not have an extensive collection of rare or legendary moments, so they are limited to single use commons. Even with a limited lineup, participants have found a way to reach the maximum rewards. Follow along as the Tome Collective account participates in Fast Break without using any player more than once - in both our success and failures.

With a breakneck pace at the end of the Golden State vs. Lakers game, we barely crossed the threshold for both assists and steals and earned our 3rd win of this challenging run. Hoping the trend continues going into Day 5. Anthony Davis is the best option on the day, but we’re saving him for Day 10 where more points in the paint and offensive rebounds are needed.
