NBA Fast Break Run 9 | Day 5

Pick 5 Players who will combine for 30 Assists and 5 Steals to earn your win.

Overview:

With the looming NBA trade deadline (Thursday, February 6th @ 3:00PM ET), there will likely be more action that could impact Fast Break lineups. There are usually a list of untouchables - players who not be traded no matter what. But the Luka-AD trade, orchestrated by Nico Harrison (Mavericks GM), threw that playbook out the window. “This is the world we’re living in,” said Giannis. “It’s a business. You have to understand this. Nobody’s safe.” If you’re someone who sets their lineups and forgets it, you’ll want to keep tabs on meaningful trade news, injuries, late scratches, etc. as it could be the difference between pulling out a win or coming up short.

With the high number of players who scored 30+ points yesterday (and a couple 40+ point scorers), we had 64% of participants walk away with a win when the typical number of winners on a ‘points scored’ day is usually closer to 50%. Jalen Brunson, who was allowed to walk away in free agency to New York under Nico Harrison’s watch, scored a day-high 42 points and helped 62% of lineups put a significant dent on the 125 points needed yesterday. For that, he earned the Fast Break Stud of the Day. Of the five players who were the most utilized, Franz Wagner was the only one who failed to reach the 25 point average needed for each player (he finished with 21). By default, he earned the Fast Break Dud of the Day Award.

Another fun fact about Nico Harrison you may have heard already by now. He was the Nike executive who fumbled signing Steph Curry to a shoe deal, who subsequently signed with Under Armour which accounted for $250M in sales last year alone. If you’re a Mavericks fan who’s reading this article, you deserve (another) hug. Let’s dive into today’s projections and help you maximize your lineup.

Today’s Objective(s):

Fast Break Day 5 requires five (5) players who will distribute 30.0 or more assists and accumulate 5.0 or more steals, which means your lineup will need to average 6.0 AST and 1.0 STL per player. These two stats are not always correlated as they not typically accomplished by the same player during a single possession. There are, however, some players who have proficiency for objectives. Otherwise, a moneyball approach would not be a poor choice - especially if you can rely on them to bring more than their fair share for either objective. Use the data below to maximize your lineup and hopefully they all show up to help you win the day.

  • Little of Both: James Harden, Tyrese Haliburton

  • Distributors: James Harden, LeBron James, Tyrese Haliburton, Jalen Brunson, Tyrese Maxey, Darius Garland

  • Thieves: Jarred Vanderbilt, Tari Eason, Amen Thompson, Anthony Edwards, Devin Booker, Cade Cunningham, Nikola Jokic, Kevin Durant

  • Top Five (5) Players in FB Lineups: T. Haliburton (86%), J. Harden (86%), L. James (46%), D. Russell (44%), D. Garland (40%)

Looking Ahead:

  • Tomorrow, 15 three pointers made & 25 three point attempts will be the two objectives; 22 teams in action

  • Objectives frequency (after today):

    • 2x: 3PM, 3PA, FGM

    • 1x: +/-, OREB, AST-TO, FGA, BLK, PIP, REB, PTS, AST, STL

Considerations:

  • Memphis & New York have the least games remaining this run (4)

  • Eleven (11) teams have the most games remaining this run (6)

  • Houston, Indy, New York, and Portland are playing the tail-end of back-to-back games

  • Day 10 & 12 only have 6 & 8 teams in action, respectively so your lineup options will be more limited

  • Day 7 only have two (2) teams in action, so plan around this date to avoid being stuck without options

  • Day 6, 9, 11, & 13 have 20 or more teams in action (Day 13 has all 30 teams in action)

  • Half the days this run will have a single objective (or resembles a single objective)

  • Assists minus turnovers makes a return on Day 10

  • The always volatile +/- lands on Day 7 with a slighter higher threshold (30 vs. 25)

Statistical Approach:

Top players in projected points scored according to Rotowire & NBA.com, which is available in the table(s) below. Overall rank is based on daily projections, last 10 games, and rest of season projections, which is stack ranked amongst peers for each objective. When there is a single objective, the three data points are still used to stack rank the players vs. ranking solely on projections. For tome+ subscribers, projected rest-of-season stats are available in the provided data file. Omission of certain players would be based on injuries at the time of data pull.

Tome Collective’s Fast Break Run 9 Line-Up (Commons Only Challenge):

Many Fast Break participants do not have an extensive collection of rare or legendary moments, so they are limited to single use commons. Even with a limited lineup, participants have found a way to reach the maximum rewards. Follow along as the Tome Collective account participates in Fast Break without using any player more than once - in both our success and failures.

With Dame out yesterday, we swapped in Siakam who scored 22. We are also beneficiary of Brunson’s big day who helped us earn win #3 of this run. Today’s success will likely depend on whether we hit the steals objective.
