NBA Playoff Race
Shake the Snow Globe — The Eastern Playoff Race Gets Messier
Boston Pulls Away, Cleveland Explodes. Boston wins in Atlanta 109–102 behind a 36-point Payton Pritchard explosion and moves to 49–24, extending their lead over New York to a full game for the 2-seed. The Celtics are in the driver's seat — their chances of catching Detroit are slim, but the gap over the Knicks is real and growing. Cleveland, meanwhile, drops 149 on Miami in a blowout that was never close. Max Strus torched the Heat for 29 on 8 threes off the bench and James Harden orchestrated with 17 points and 14 assists against one turnover. The Cavaliers move to 46–28 and are quietly one of the hottest teams in the East and have an outside chance at catching the Knicks, but they only have 8 games remaining to do it.
OKC Extends, San Antonio Waits. OKC handles Chicago 131–113 and moves to 58–16. With San Antonio idle, the Thunder push their lead over the Spurs to 2.5 games — the largest margin in recent weeks. OKC controls their own destiny for the 1-seed. The Spurs are still on a 7-game win streak with a matching 9-1 L10, but time is running short and they need OKC to slip.
Denver Rolling, Houston Stabilizes, Dallas Flips Portland. Denver rolls to a fifth straight win, 135–129 over Utah, moving to 47–28 and extending their cushion over Minnesota for the 4-seed. They're 8-2 in their last 10 and playing their best basketball of the second half. Houston snaps a two-game skid with a road win in Memphis, stabilizing their grip on the 6-seed at 44–29. Dallas beats Portland 100–93, flipping the 8 and 9 seeds — the Trail Blazers slide to 9th while the Clippers, who edged Indiana 114–113, climb to 8th on a 4-game win streak.
The Eastern Bubble Cracks — Miami Is Now on the Outside. Yesterday's column flagged six teams within 2.0 games in the Eastern bubble. One night later it's gotten messier, not cleaner. The three-way tie at 39–34 from last night has broken in the worst possible way for Miami — Cleveland's blowout drops the Heat to 39–35 and half a game outside the play-in line entirely. Charlotte and Orlando hold the 8 and 9 seeds at 39–34. Philadelphia sits one game clear at 40–33 in 7th. Toronto holds the 6-seed at 41–32, one game ahead of a sliding Atlanta. The gap from 5th to 10th is just 2.5 games, and every remaining game is a tiebreaker.
The Western Play-In Is Tightening Too. Phoenix remains at 40–33 and idle tonight, but Houston's win keeps the gap at 3.5 games for the 6-seed — the Suns are fading fast with limited runway left. The Clippers' win over Indiana on a buzzer-beater tightens their grip on the 8-seed, while Portland's loss to Dallas drops them to 37–38. Golden State beats Washington 131–126 to move to 36–38 on a W3 — the Warriors aren't going anywhere quietly.
