NBA Playoff Race
Final Game of the Regular Season — Some Seeds Up for Grabs
The Only Races That Matter on the Final Day. With the regular season ending Sunday, most of the standings are already written. The top three seeds in the West — OKC, San Antonio, Denver — are settled. Seeds 1 through 5 in the East are locked. What remains are a handful of genuinely live races where teams have real stakes heading into the final day, and everyone else is managing minutes ahead of a playoff run that starts April 18.
Friday's 15-game slate sorted a lot — but not everything.
Denver Beat OKC's Bench — The 3-Seed Is Locked Either Way. Denver won 127-107 over Oklahoma City on Friday, extending their winning streak to eleven. Worth noting: OKC had the playoffs clinched and their seeding secure, so this wasn't a full-strength Thunder effort. The Nuggets are 53-28 and playing well regardless, but let's keep it in context. The West's top three seeds — Thunder, Spurs, Nuggets — are all settled. San Antonio beat Dallas 139-120 to close at 62-19. OKC drops to 64-17. Denver rolls into the postseason on an eleven-game run; possibly twelve-game win streak depending on Sunday’s outcome.
Lakers vs. Rockets: Home Court Gets Decided Sunday. The only remaining race in the West's top six is the 4-5 seed between the Lakers and the Rockets. Los Angeles beat Phoenix 101-73 on Friday to move to 52-29. Houston lost to Minnesota 136-132 and fell to 51-30. The Lakers hold the edge right now — but the Rockets are one win away from pulling even, and if both teams play Sunday, the tiebreaker could decide who hosts and who travels in the first round.
These two are going to meet in the first round regardless. Sunday determines who has home court when they do.
Atlanta Flips the 5-6, Cleveland Gets a Reminder. Atlanta beat Cleveland 124-102 on Friday, claiming sole possession of the East's 5-seed at 46-35. Cleveland drops to 51-30 and still holds the 4-seed — the Cavaliers are fine — but getting blown out at home by a division rival isn't the tone anyone wants to set.
Atlanta's reward for winning the 5-seed is a first-round matchup with the 4-seed Cavaliers. So those two aren't done with each other.
Toronto and Orlando: One Game Left, One Playoff Spot on the Line. This is the race. Both teams are 45-36. Toronto holds the 6-seed by tiebreaker, Orlando sits at 7. The difference is significant: the 6-seed earns a direct first-round berth; the 7-seed enters the play-in tournament and needs to win one game just to reach the playoffs.
Orlando has won five straight and looks like the hotter team. Toronto is fighting to hold what they have. Both teams will almost certainly play their full rotations Sunday — there's nothing to rest for if you're playing for your postseason life. Whatever happens, one of these teams is getting a direct playoff spot and the other is heading to the play-in. It gets decided in one day…and the winner gets New York in the first round whereas the 7-seed could face Boston (if they escape the play-in tournament).
The East's Top Half Is Set — and Playing Loose. Detroit, Boston, New York, and Cleveland are all locked into seeds 1 through 4. The Knicks beat Toronto on Friday to extend their win streak to five and close at 53-28. Boston demolished New Orleans 144-118 to bounce back to 55-26. Detroit won in Charlotte 118-100 to move to 59-22.
These teams are playing, but they're also not risking anything. Expect rotations to be managed carefully Sunday — the playoffs are a week away and no one with a locked seed needs a torn Achilles in a meaningless game.
West Play-In: Portland and the Clippers Are Deadlocked. Portland beat the Clippers 116-97 on Friday, and now both teams sit at 41-40, tied for the 8-9 seeds in the West. Phoenix holds the 7-seed at 44-37 — three games clear with one to play, so that spot is secure. Golden State is at 37-44 and are buried in the 10-seed and will need two wins to reach the playoffs.
The Portland-Clippers tiebreaker is what matters now. Head-to-head record between the two will sort the 8-9 split heading into the play-in tournament. Both teams have something real to play for Sunday; neither will be resting starters.
