NBA Playoff Race
Thirty More Regular Season Games — Many Seeds Up for Grabs
New York Just Reminded Everyone They're Dangerous. The Knicks beat Boston 112-106 at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night, and it wasn't just a standings shuffle — it was a statement. New York climbs to 52-28 on a four-game win streak, and carrying momentum into the playoffs where they are technically still within reach of the 2-seed, but likely to land in the 3-seed with their opponent unclear. The Celtics have lost two straight after a four-game run, and while they're not in any danger of slipping out of the top three, the timing is worth noting with the playoffs around the corner.
For the Knicks, this is the kind of win that builds confidence heading into the postseason. The 3-seed is theirs, and they're playing their best basketball at exactly the right moment.
Toronto Control Their Destiny. The Raptors handled Miami 128-114 in Toronto on Wednesday, winning their second straight and moving to 45-35. The problem? Atlanta is sitting right next to them at 45-35 after dropping their own game, and the 5-6 tiebreaker between these two teams, but their first round opponent in either case will be difficult.
These aren't small stakes. The 5-seed in the East draws the 4-seed Cavaliers in the first round. The 6-seed draws the Knicks. There's a real difference in those matchups, and with Toronto and Atlanta now locked in a dead heat at identical records, every remaining game for both teams is essential. The three teams lurking could also steal one of their playoff seats as well.
Miami Fades into the 10-Seed. The Heat dropped to 41-39 with the loss in Toronto, and dampen their chances at moving up in the standings. Miami is 3-7 in their last 10 and has now lost two straight. The Heat are currently the 10-seed — meaning they'd need to win two play-in games just to reach the first round — and their remaining schedule isn't doing them any favors.
Charlotte sits at 43-37 and Philadelphia is also 43-37, both holding play-in spots ahead of Miami. Two full games back with the season ending Sunday, Miami would need to win out and get significant help just to gain a home court game.
Houston Extends to Eight — and the Lakers Finally Won. Wednesday night in the West was about the 4-5 race resolving itself — or rather, refusing to. Houston beat Philadelphia 113-102 to push their win streak to eight, moving to 51-29. The Lakers beat Golden State 119-103 to snap their own three-game skid and also move to 51-29. Both teams are now locked again at identical records.
The 4-5 distinction matters here. The 4-seed draws the 5-seed's opposite number in the first round bracket with the former gaining the always important home court advantage. Should neither catch Denver, it also means the second round will likely be against Oklahoma City.
The East Play-In Is Still a Mess. Orlando continues to hold the 7-seed at 44-36 after winning four straight — they didn't play Wednesday but their position remains secure for now. Philadelphia dropped to 43-37 after the Houston loss, falling into a tie with Charlotte at 43-37 for the 8-9 spots. Both teams are a full two games ahead of Miami.
The difference between 7 and 8 in the East Play-In Tournament only needs one win to move into the playoffs whereas the 9 & 10 seeds would need to win two games to make the postseason.
