WNBA Score(s): August 25th

Liberty Hold Off Sun in Tight Finish at Barclays (NYL 81, CON 79)

The Liberty bounced back from a tough road stretch with a narrow win over the Sun, surviving a fourth-quarter surge led by Leila Lacan’s game-high 22 points. Breanna Stewart paced New York with 19 points, while Jonquel Jones added 15 and 9 rebounds. Connecticut clawed back from a double-digit deficit, but missed opportunities in the final minute sealed their fate. The win moved New York to 23–15, keeping them in striking distance of Atlanta in the East.

Aces Grind Past Sky Behind Young’s Steady Hand (LVA 79, CHI 74)

Jackie Young led the Aces with 22 points as Las Vegas held off a feisty Chicago squad at Wintrust Arena. The Sky got a monster outing from Ariel Atkins, who dropped 30 points and kept Chicago within reach until the final minute. A’ja Wilson added 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Chelsea Gray dished out 8 assists to guide Vegas to its 25th win of the season. The Aces extended their win streak to 11, tightening their grip on the No. 2 seed in the West.

Recap: Day 1

Day 1 required points in the paint and offensive rebounds and 70% of Fast Breakers earned a win. With the low threshold for both objectives, it didn’t take much to get across the win line. Players who are normally reliable turned out to be middle of the road. A’ja Wilson, for example, was the most utilized player yet only delivered 6 points in the paint and one offensive rebound. Of the top five players, NaLyssa Smith had the most points in the paint (8), but it wasn’t much higher than the rest.

Today’s Matchups:

Seattle Storm (20-18) @ Indiana Fever (19-18) | 7:00PM ET | 11:00PM UTC

Tonight’s opener features the Seattle Storm (20–18) visiting the Indiana Fever (19–18) in a game with postseason implications for both squads. Seattle enters as the slight favorite with a 54.4% win probability, riding a three-game road win streak and anchored by four All-Stars—Nneka Ogwumike, Skylar Diggins, Gabby Williams, and Brittney Sykes whereas Indiana counters with Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston. With both teams sitting on the playoff bubble, Seattle’s defensive versatility and road rhythm give them the projected edge.

Phoenix Mercury (22-14) @ Los Angeles Sparks (17-18) | 10:00PM ET | 2:00AM UTC

Later tonight at Crypto.com Arena, the Phoenix Mercury face the Los Angeles Sparks, with Phoenix favored at 60.5% win probability. The Mercury have won all four meetings against L.A. this season, and Kahleah Copper continues to lead the charge alongside Alyssa Thomas. The Sparks will look to Kelsey Plum and Dearica Hamby to break the streak, but Phoenix’s rebounding advantage and recent form suggest they’ll complete the season sweep and tighten their grip on a top-four seed.
