NBA Playoff Race
Shifts in the Week Ahead — Crucial Week for Many Teams
Boston Is Now the Favorite for the 2-Seed — and the Gap Is Growing. Boston beat Charlotte 114–99 behind 32 from Tatum and 28 from Pritchard, moving to 50–24 on a W3. They now lead New York by 2.5 games for the 2-seed, and with the Knicks dropping their second straight — a 111–100 loss in OKC — that gap is becoming structural rather than correctable. The week ahead is critical for New York. Any further slippage and they could lose their hold on the 3-seed to Cleveland who are 1.5 games behind.
OKC Controls the 1-Seed Race — San Antonio Needs Help. OKC moves to 59–16 with a W2, and with San Antonio idle, the Thunder hold their 2.5-game lead. The Spurs are still on a W8 with a 9-1 L10, but their remaining schedule determines everything. This week will likely decide whether the 1-seed race has any drama left in it or whether OKC simply runs it out.
The West's 5/6 Seeds Are Now a Dead Heat — and It Matters. Denver's sixth straight win moves them to 48–28 and further locks up the 4-seed. Below them, Houston's 134–102 win in New Orleans pulls them even with Minnesota at 45–29 — tied on record, with Houston holding the tiebreaker. The 5 plays the 4 in Round 1, the 6 plays the 3. Given that Denver and LA Lakers are the 4 and 3 seeds respectively, there's a meaningful difference in first-round draw. Watch this race closely in the coming days.
Toronto Is Separating, Orlando Is Fading Fast. Toronto's 52-point demolition of Orlando — 139–87 — does two things simultaneously. It pushes the Raptors to 42–32 on a W2 and extends their lead over Atlanta for the 5-seed by 0.5 games. And it accelerates Orlando's freefall — the Magic drop to 39–35, 3-7 in their last 10, on an L2. The week ahead for Orlando is essentially must-win territory. Miami fell at Indiana 135–118 to go 39–36 and Charlotte dropped to 39–36 as well. Three teams in the 8-10 cluster are all sliding simultaneously with the calendar running out. The eight seed guarantees at least two games in the play-in and the nine seed locks in a home game.
The Clippers Are Climbing at the Right Time. Five straight wins for LA, now 39–36 and holding the 8-seed with momentum. Portland reaches .500 at 38–38 after beating Washington. The West play-in bracket is more competitive than it looked two weeks ago — and with Houston and Minnesota tied for the 6-seed, there's real possibility that a team currently in the play-in surges into direct berth territory before the regular season ends.
