Everything to Know About the NBA Play-In Tournament

The regular season is over. Eight teams are still playing. Four of them will make the playoffs. Four of them will go home.

The SoFi NBA Play-In Tournament tips off on Tuesday, April 14th with two games, continues Wednesday with two more, and wraps Friday with a pair of final elimination matchups. Here's everything you need to know about who's playing, what's at stake, and how it all works.

How the Play-In Works

The 7 and 8 seeds in each conference play each other first. The winner earns the 7-seed outright and heads to the first round. The loser gets one more shot.

The 9 and 10 seeds have their backs against the wall — same stakes, one game, winner advances. The loser goes home.

Those two survivors — the 7/8 loser and the 9/10 winner — then meet on Friday, April 17. The winner of that game becomes the 8-seed. The loser's season is over.

Simple. Brutal. Here's what's on the line for each matchup.

TUESDAY, APRIL 14 | Miami Heat (10) at Charlotte Hornets (9) @ 7:30pm ET

What's at stake: Winner advances to face the loser of Philadelphia-Orlando on Friday. Loser goes home.

This is a pure survival game with no margin for error. Miami finished the regular season at 43-39, Charlotte at 44-38 — a half-game separated these two all season, and now they meet in the first round of the play-in with elimination on the line for both.

Charlotte had the better regular season and has home court. Miami enters having gone 5-5 over their last 10, but they did beat Toronto down the stretch in a game that mattered. Neither team is particularly rested, neither is particularly healthy, and neither has the look of a team that's going to scare Detroit or Boston in the first round. But one of them will have a shot at it.

The Hornets are the more stable team at home. If they play at their ceiling (especially from outside), they advance. Miami needs a road win just to stay alive — and the Heat haven't been a reliable road team all season.

What happens next: The winner faces the loser of Philadelphia-Orlando on Friday, April 17, for the East's 8-seed. That team then opens the first round against the Detroit Pistons (1-seed).

Prediction: Charlotte over Miami — home court, better record, more reliable

TUESDAY, APRIL 14 | Portland Trail Blazers (8) at Phoenix Suns (7) @ 10:00pm ET

What's at stake: Winner earns the West's 7-seed and a first-round matchup with the San Antonio Spurs (2-seed). Loser faces the winner of Golden State-Clippers on Friday for the 8-seed.

This is the higher-stakes of Tuesday's two games. Portland and Phoenix both have something to play for beyond just survival — the 7-seed winner gets San Antonio rather than Oklahoma City in the first round, which is a meaningful distinction even if neither path is easy.

Phoenix finished at 45-37 and holds home court. The Suns have been inconsistent all season — their 5-5 L10 record tells the story of a team that shows up some nights and disappears others. Portland is 42-40 and got here by beating the Clippers on the final weekend to force the tiebreaker. The Trail Blazers are playing with house money and have nothing to lose.

Home court matters in one-game scenarios. Phoenix gets the edge tonight, but Portland is dangerous precisely because they're not expected to win.

What happens next: The winner is the West's 7-seed and plays San Antonio in the first round beginning April 18. The loser faces the Golden State-Clippers winner on Friday for the West's 8-seed, with OKC waiting in the first round.

Prediction: Phoenix over Portland — inconsistent but at home; Portland keeps it close

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15 | Orlando Magic (8) at Philadelphia 76ers (7) @ 7:30pm ET

What's at stake: Winner earns the East's 7-seed and a first-round matchup with the Boston Celtics (2-seed). Loser faces the Charlotte-Miami winner on Friday for the 8-seed.

This is the most intriguing matchup of the play-in. Orlando are winners in five of their last six and is the hottest team in this play-in field. The Magic closed the regular season playing their best basketball — and ended up with the 8-seed only because of tiebreaker. Philadelphia is the 7-seed, gets home court, and has been solid if unspectacular down the stretch at 45-37.

The 76ers' home court is real. Philly crowds in playoff settings are among the loudest in the East, and for a one-game elimination scenario, that environment matters. But Orlando's momentum is undeniable. 7-3 in their final 10 games (and 5 of their last 6) to close the regular season is not something you manufacture — the Magic are locked in.

Winner draws Boston. Both fanbases have opinions about that matchup. Regardless, Wednesday night in Philly should be loud.

What happens next: The winner is the East's 7-seed and plays Boston in the first round. The loser plays the Charlotte-Miami survivor on Friday for the East's 8-seed, with Detroit waiting.

Prediction: Orlando over Philadelphia — recent form is the deciding factor over home court

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15 | Golden State Warriors (10) at LA Clippers (9) @ 10:00pm ET

What's at stake: Winner advances to face the loser of Portland-Phoenix on Friday. Loser goes home.

Golden State finished 37-45. The Clippers finished 42-40. On paper this isn't close — the Clippers are the better team, have home court, and have a full game and a half of separation from the Warriors in the final standings. In practice, one-game elimination scenarios have a way of flattening those distinctions.

Golden State has the experience edge — the Warriors know what late-season pressure looks like. But this Clippers team has been building toward something, and losing at home to a team they outpaced by four games all season would be a stunning result.

What happens next: The winner faces the Portland-Phoenix loser on Friday for the West's 8-seed. That team then opens the first round against OKC.

Prediction: Clippers over Golden State — Warriors have the postseason experience, but the Clippers have Kawhi

The Friday Finish Line

Both 8-seed games take place Friday, April 17:

East: The loser of Philadelphia-Orlando meets the survivor of Miami-Charlotte. Win and you get Detroit in the first round. Lose and your season is done.

West: The loser of Portland-Phoenix meets the winner of Golden State-Clippers. Win and you get OKC in the first round. Lose and you're watching from home.

The play-in exists to give bubble teams a real shot. All four of Friday's potential participants will have earned it just by getting there.
