NBA Playoff Race
Playoff/Play-In Tournament Implications Across 10 Games
OKC Keeps Rolling, But the Race Behind Them Is Ruthless. Oklahoma City didn't just beat the Lakers on Tuesday night — they embarrassed them, 123-87, extending their win streak to six and widening the gap at the top of the West to three games over San Antonio. The Thunder are 63-16 and cruising. The 1-seed is theirs. What's still very much up for grabs is everything below them.
Houston won its seventh straight, beating Phoenix 119-105, and now sits tied with the Lakers at 50-29 for the 4-seed. The Rockets hold the tiebreaker edge, which means LA is currently looking up at three teams and fighting to hold the 5. Golden State's 110-105 win over Sacramento gives the Warriors momentum going into the Play-In Tournament.
Denver, meanwhile, has quietly run off nine straight wins and sits alone in third at 51-28. The Nuggets are playing their best basketball of the season at exactly the right time.
Toronto Took Care of Business — Now Comes the Hard Part. The Raptors handled Miami with ease Tuesday, 121-95, moving to 44-35 and holding the 6-seed in the East. But Toronto's cushion over the play-in crowd is razor-thin: one game separates them from Philadelphia and Orlando, who are both 43-36 and hunting.
What makes this stretch especially treacherous is that Philadelphia (43-36) and Orlando (43-36) are essentially tied for the 7 and 8 spots, with Charlotte (43-37) breathing down their necks a half-game behind. The Hornets lost to Boston on Tuesday, which kept them from pulling even — but this four-team logjam between seeds 6 and 10 is going to look different every single day from here to the finish.
Miami dropped to 41-38 with the blowout loss in Toronto and are looking like the 10-seed in a crowded Eastern Conference.
The East's Top Half Is Sorted — Mostly. Detroit leads the East at 57-22 despite dropping Tuesday's game, with Boston four back at 54-25 on a four-game win streak after beating Charlotte. The Celtics are the hottest team in the conference right now, and if that form holds, there's a real argument they're the more dangerous team come playoff time regardless of seed.
New York (51-28) and Cleveland (50-29) round out the top four and look locked in. The Cavs have won three straight. The Knicks have won three straight. The 4-seed may be the preferred option due to their second round opponent considering how well Boston has played as of late.
Atlanta holds the 5-seed at 45-34 — sitting comfortably enough for now, but with Toronto at 44-35 right behind them, the Hawks can't afford to sleepwalk through the final stretch.
Out West, the Play-In Picture Is Ugly. Phoenix dropped to 43-36 with the loss to Houston and currently holds the 7-seed — but the Suns are 4-6 in their last 10, playing uninspired ball, and haven't looked like a team that belongs in a win-or-go-home scenario, let alone a second-round run. They are poised to quietly exit the Play-In Tournament based on their recent play.
The Clippers are 41-38 after beating Dallas 116-103 and have won two straight. Portland sits at 40-39 after a loss, and Golden State's win over Sacramento keeps them alive at 37-42 — though they'd need a massive late surge to climb out of the 10 spot.
With the regular season winding down, the West play-in is going to be chaotic. There are legitimate questions about who shows up ready to compete and who's just trying to survive.
