Play-In Taking Shape — But Also Not
Orlando Beats Detroit, Three-Way Tie. Paolo Banchero put together the night's best individual performance — 31 points on 10-of-16 shooting with 6 free throws made, 3 steals, and a plus-23 in a 123–107 win over the Pistons. Jalen Suggs ran the show with 12 and 12 assists. Desmond Bane added 25. The Magic forced 21 Detroit turnovers and converted them into 33 points, building a 26-point lead that made the fourth quarter academic. Orlando improves to 43-36 and their record mirrors that of Philadelphia and Charlotte. They still have three games remaining and the 6-seed is still in play. For Detroit, the loss drops them to 57-22. The top seed is locked up, and with nothing left to play for but seeding polish, the Pistons are in cruise control for the final week — but Monday was not their night.
San Antonio Bounces Back, Wins No. 60. The Spurs answered their Denver overtime loss in emphatic fashion, beating Philadelphia 115–102 on the road to improve to 60-19 and pull within 2.5 games of Oklahoma City. Stephon Castle was brilliant — 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 13 assists for a triple-double. Dylan Harper added 17 on 7-of-11 shooting. De'Aaron Fox contributed 13. San Antonio posted 22 fast break points and held the Sixers to 38.2% shooting from the field. For Philadelphia, the loss is crushing. They drop to 43-36, now tied with Orlando and Charlotte, but only 0.5 games out of the 6-seed. Joel Embiid had 34 points and 12 rebounds but couldn't carry the load himself, and the Sixers shot just 31.3% from three.
New York Survives Atlanta, 108–105 — Hawks' Streak Ends. Atlanta's five-game winning streak came to an end in a tight, physical Monday night game. Nickeil Alexander-Walker was spectacular off the bench — 36 points on 12-of-19 shooting with 7-of-11 from three — but the Hawks couldn't close it down the stretch. Jalen Brunson ran the Knicks' offense with 30 points and 13 assists. Karl-Anthony Towns posted 21 points and 12 rebounds on 9-of-12 shooting. New York wins 108–105 and improves to 51-28 and holds a 1.0 game lead over Cleveland for the 3-seed. Atlanta drops to 45-34, but has the 5-seed locked up with no chance to move up or down the rankings.
Cleveland Rolls Past Memphis, Moves to 50-29. The Cavaliers had no trouble in Memphis, winning 142–126 in a game that was decided by halftime. Cleveland improves to 50-29 and stays at the East's No. 4 seed and stay 1.0 games behind New York. With the Cavs locked in and playing their best basketball of the second half, they're building momentum heading into the postseason.
Denver Beats Portland, Extends Win Streak. Denver held off Portland down the stretch to win 137–132 and improve to 51-28, moving up to 3rd in the West behind a nine-game winning streak. Portland falls to 40-39 and remains the West's No. 9 seed, but are only 0.5 games behind the Clippers.
