WNBA Fast Break Classic |2025 Playoffs | Day 5
Today’s Objective(s): 7 Three Pointers Made & 15 Three Point Attempts
Overview:
It was an eventful day in WNBA Playoff land as both games came down to the wire in competitive first round finales. Indiana stunned the favored Atlanta Dream team who had championship aspirations, but who will not head home to cycle through the what-if’s. In the other game, Las Vegas needed a tip-in shot by Jackie Young with 12 seconds in the game and they needed to survive a good look from Erika Wheeler with 4 seconds on the clock to escape with a hard fought win. Now Vegas & Indiana will face one another in the semifinals.
Next up, we have the finale of the first round between New York & Phoenix, which has no clear favorite. The winner will have the tall task of facing the Minnesota Lynx, who are the odds-on favorite to win the championship this season. As a reminder, the semifinals are a best of five series, so there will be at least three (3) days of games for each team who gets out of the first round.
WNBA Recap: September 18th
Fever Shock the Dream in Atlanta (IND 87, ATL 85)
In a game that felt like a referendum on resilience, the Indiana Fever closed out their first-round series with a gutsy 87–85 win over the Atlanta Dream at Gateway Center Arena. Kelsey Mitchell led all scorers with 24 points, slicing through Atlanta’s defense with precision, while Aliyah Boston anchored the paint with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Boston’s go-ahead layup with 7.4 seconds left gave Indiana its first lead since the second quarter, and Lexie Hull’s steal on the ensuing inbounds set up Odyssey Sims at the line. After hitting one of two, the Dream had a final chance, but Brionna Jones’ off-balance three at the buzzer missed the mark. The Fever, who entered the postseason as underdogs, now advance to the semifinals with a blend of youth, grit, and a chip the size of College Park.
Wilson Drops 38 as Aces Survive Storm in Game 3 Classic (LVA 74, SEA 73)
A’ja Wilson put the Aces on her back with a dominant 38-point performance, leading Las Vegas to a narrow 74–73 win over the Seattle Storm in Game 3 at Michelob ULTRA Arena. Seattle rallied from a double-digit deficit behind 15 points from Skylar Diggins and 14 from Nneka Ogwumike, keeping the pressure on until the final possession. Jackie Young added 14 for Vegas, and Chelsea Gray chipped in 12 points and 8 assists, helping the Aces maintain composure down the stretch. The Storm had a chance to steal it late, but the Aces’ defense held firm, and Wilson’s career-high playoff outing sealed the win. Las Vegas now advances to the semifinals, battle-tested and riding the momentum of their MVP’s peak form.
Fast Break Results: Day 4
69% of Fast Break participants earned a win, which is the fourth day in a row where more than 60% of collectors walked away with a smile on their faces. Rhyne Howard & Kelsey Mitchell have been mainstays on three pointer days and they did not disappoint. Rhyne went 2 for 8 from outside and was utilized in 61% of lineups whereas Kelsey went 3 for 6 from deep and was utilized in 63% of lineups. Rhyne had more combined stats, but Kelsey nailed more three pointers. In both cases, they contributed mightily to those who utilized them, so they are your Fast Break co-Stars of the Day.
Jewell Loyd, on the other hand, was the most utilized player at 78%, but went 0 for 0 from deep. With her non-existent performance, she earned the unanimous Fast Break Dud of the Day award.
Round 1: Best of Three Series
New York Liberty @ Phoenix Mercury | 9:00PM ET | 1:00AM UTC (Series Tied 1-1)
The Phoenix Mercury host the New York Liberty tonight in a win-or-go-home Game 3, and the desert crowd will be loud. Breanna Stewart, fresh off her return to the lineup, is expected to take on a heavier load after logging 20 minutes in Game 2. Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones remain central to New York’s offensive rhythm, with Jones controlling the boards and Ionescu orchestrating from the perimeter. Phoenix counters with Kahleah Copper, whose slashing drives and playoff pedigree have kept the Mercury competitive, and Satou Sabally, who’s been a matchup headache with her length and shot-making. With home-court advantage and momentum from Game 1, Phoenix enters with confidence—but Stewart’s presence and New York’s playoff-tested core make this a true toss-up.
